The Importance of Interdisciplinary Studies in Growth Studies and Japan's Long Stagnation
TOGO, Ken
After reviewing trends in economic growth studies since the mid-1980s, this paper argues the importanceof interdisciplinary studies in growth studies. In addition, I present several hypotheses from the perspective ofinterdisciplinary research on the “long-term stagnation of the Japanese economy,” which is an interesting themein growth studies, and discuss the validity of these hypotheses.

; This paper empirically analyzes the hypothesis that demographics are driving price fluctuations in various cities in Japan, which has been hit by a prolonged mild deflation since the mid-2010s. Empirical results do not support the effect of the population growth raising prices through increasing aggregate demand, but rather imply that the increase in labor supply pushes up aggregate supply and then lowers prices. It is also shown that while the depreciation of yen brings about an increase in prices, the rise in crude oil prices lowers the prices of food, clothing and footwear, and eating out due to households' thrifty behavior in a wide range of goods and services.
